I never know where to start with Planeta, a wine family that is, quite rightly, an icon in Italian drinking circles. Most famous for wines made with international varieties, I especially like their efforts in less-known areas of Italy such as Milazzo or their especially strong work in the area of Vittoria and Noto. The Planeta family has done a great deal on behalf of Sicily’s wines and have many historical merits; in this light, a sign that times were a’ changing in Sicily was undoubtedly given by Diego Planeta, when, while remaining the chairman of the extremely large Settesoli coop, he set up the Planeta winery, where he was able to try new and different things, that would have been clearly much harder to put into place at a coop. A recognized Sicilian wine quality leader now famous all over the world, Planeta is a good case of leading by example.
