There is a lot to like in these new releases from Rodolphe Péters. The flagship Chétillons and the newer Reserve Oubliée and ultra-premium Etonnant Monsieur Victor get most of the attention, but for my money, the Esprit is the wine to buy in this range, especially in top vintages like 2013. As always, these Champagnes stand out for the purity of expression of Chardonnay as grown in top sights in the Côtes des Blancs. Pierre Péters fans will also want to be on the lookout for the new project taking shape in Santa Barbara with Justin Willett and Étienne de Montille.

I tasted a number of gorgeous wines during my most recent visit with Rodolphe Péters. Several of these new releases are based on the 2013 vintage, a year that produced compelling wines in the Côte des Blancs, with high natural sugars and equally elevated acids, a rare combination to be sure. The growing season, as measured by the time from flowering to harvest, exceeded 100 days, a classic parameter for a high quality year. The first 2013s from this cellar suggest Péters captured all the potential I sensed when I tasted the vins clairs in March 2014.
