At the fairytale estate of Pichon Baron, Christian Seely and winemaker Pierre Montégut, who joined in 2022, welcomed me at their tasting room to taste through a diverse range of dry and sweet whites, plus their reds.

“We have a charming vintage, probably more interesting than people expected,” Montégut opined. “We had heavy rain with a lot of mildew pressure during winter and the beginning of spring. There was a nice period without hot temperatures in the summer and without rain for two months. We had some stress to ripen the tannins. Average temperatures were higher than in 2023, which explains the maturity and sweetness of the tannins. Of course, 2024 is a fresh vintage with a lower level of alcohol like in 2021.”

Seely continued: “The wines definitely have good colour because we were working on low yields to give the wines density and matter. particularly with the Grand Vin, which contains a very high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet performed better than the Merlot. There is no Petit Verdot in any of the blends as it didn’t get ripe enough, though the Cabernet Franc from our massal selection was better.”
