Philipponnat is a fine example of a traditional house that has added to its range with a set of smaller, site-specific wines. I also tasted two future releases of Clos des Goisses disgorged à la volée, in other words, on the spot, with no added dosage, both of which are quite promising.

I tasted a wide range of Champagnes, both new and old, with Charles Philipponnat and his son François recently. The flagship Clos des Goisses has long been one of Champagne’s most iconic wines. In recent years, though, I have been especially impressed with the entry-level offerings, wines that not too long ago were far less notable. Dosage is on the lower side for the top cuvées, which confers a feeling of vinous intensity and texture that runs throughout the range, the exception being the Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé, which is always an ethereal Rosé.
