Lisa Togni has quietly established herself as one of the most respected winemakers in Napa Valley. Parents Philip and Birgitta are never far away, however, a reminder that this remains very much a family-owned and operated winery. In 2022, harvest began on August 23, the earliest ever recorded here. Temperatures then soared to levels never seen before. The 2022s are excellent wines within the context of the year. Togni remains a reference point for fine, ageworthy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Several recent tastings have once again shown how well these wines age, even in less favorable years.

It’s always a pleasure to stop by and taste with Philip, Birgitta and Lisa Togni at this small estate vineyard on Spring Mountain. This year’s releases are superb. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the finest in recent memory, while the Tanbark Hill benefits from a bit of fruit that could not be used for the main label because the tanks for that wine were full. The Togni Cabernets embody the essence of old-school classicism in Napa Valley. Earlier this year we hosted a vertical of the wines back to 1983, which was a great opportunity to be reminded of how well these wines age.
