In my view, Giovanni Dubini is one of the three best producers of Orvieto wines, though his wines are quite different in texture and size from those of another Orvieto star like Barberani, for example. Dubini’s wines are especially austere and reticent when young but develop beautifully, showcasing noteworthy ageworthiness. They are typically large-scale (by Orvieto standards), thanks in no small measure to soils that have a much higher clay content than other areas of the denominazione. The estate takes its name from the palazzone, or big palace, bought in the 1960s by the Dubini family and thought to have been built in 1299 as a hostel for pilgrims. Today it is an elegant country retreat for vacationers.
