With two major projects in the works, one on Atlas Peak and the other near Cazadero, Jayson Pahlmeyer recently hired Erin Green, previously Helen Turley's assistant, as full-time winemaker. On his steep Atlas Peak property, just north of Caldwell Vineyard along the same ridge, Pahlmeyer has begun planting the five red Bordeaux varieties at an altitude of about 2,100 feet. Another 40 acres will go in this spring, and some sauvignon blanc and semillon are also in the works, for an "Haut-Brion Blanc blend" to go with his proprietary red. Over the longer term, Pahlmeyer hopes to make both merlot and his red blend from estate fruit. Pahlmeyer plans to begin planting pinot noir next year on his 70-acre Sonoma Coast property; there may also be some chardonnay and syrah. Don't miss this producer's '97 reds.
