These are some of the very finest wines I have tasted from Outpost since I first visited the winery nearly twenty years ago. There's still plenty of the textural richness readers have come to expect, but the 2021s also show an added touch of detail and vibrancy that is hugely appealing. Hopefully, the 2021s are a sign of things to come. Readers will note that Outpost is no longer making Grenache and Petite Sirah.

This is another fine set of new and upcoming releases from Outpost. The 2022s, all harvested from September 29 to October 20, are telling examples of the advantage later-ripening sites had in this decidedly freakish year. Not surprisingly, the 2023s are even better. Harvest ran from October 6 through the 30th. The wines offer a striking mix of freshness and textural opulence. I expect they will be even better once bottled. Outpost fans will note the addition of a new Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve in the lineup. Winemaker Tommy Ufland continues to do great work here.

It will be fascinating to see what happens at Outpost now that is part of AXA Millésimes. For now, Thomas Rivers Brown continues to make the wines in the rich, bold style that has brought Outpost so much acclaim. The 2016s are positively stellar across the board.

The 2015s from Outpost are big, powerful wines that need time to come into their own. Readers won't find much of the vintage's early appeal here, as the 2015s clearly show their Howell Mountain origins. In addition to these wines, I also tasted all of the 2016s from barrel. The 2016s are even more tightly wound than the 2015s!

This is a set of powerful wines from proprietors Frank and Kathy Dotzler and their longtime winemaker Thomas Brown. Many of the 2014s show elevated ripeness and also a roasted/pruney character that, in my view, detracts from the wines' overall balance and also masks the nuances of these sites on Howell Mountain. I also tasted all of the 2015s. Those wines are super-ripe, tannic and raw at this stage, with huge primary fruit and tons of intensity. Interestingly, the tiny crop seems to have produced a set of wines with off the charts richness but also a surprising amount of freshness. It will be interesting to see how the 2015s shape up over the next year.

This is a stellar set of wines from proprietors Frank and Kathy Dotzler, and their winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. The 2013s have all come together as I had expected based on previous tastings from barrel. In short, this is a fabulous vintage for Outpost, one of the leading estates on Howell Mountain. The 2014s were very tight and raw. Interestingly, I found the 2014s much more expressive when I tasted them this past April.

Proprietors Frank and Kathy Dotzler, along with their winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown, have turned out superb wines in both 2012 and 2013. Because of its location on Howell Mountain, Outpost often plays to its own beat rather than following the trends of vintages in other parts of the valley. The 2012s are perhaps a bit stronger than the 2013s, although it is still quite early for both vintages. All that said, I was once again taken by both the Grenache and Petite Sirah, two wines that are often overlooked in a range that focuses on Bordeaux grapes. Any way you look at it, Outpost is making compelling wines that remain largely undiscovered and therefore still represent good value within the context of Napa Valley.

Outpost was one of the highlights of my tastings in Napa Valley this year. From bottle, the 2011s show all of the promise I have sensed in these wines from the very beginning. My first visit to Outpost in 2011 was in April, when the vines were still dormant and behind schedule relative to the valley floor, which is typical of Howell Mountain. When I stopped by in October of that year I was shocked to feel firsthand how much warmer and sunnier Howell Mountain was relative to the cold, foggy conditions on the valley floor. Those two experiences pretty much sum up how unique these hillside terroirs are. My first tasting of the 2011s was in the Spring of 2012, followed by periodic tastings every six months since then. It has been fascinating and highly educational to watch these wines during their elevage, but the truth is they were pretty special from the outset. The 2012s are, of course, much silkier and soft, but, they too show plenty of Howell Mountain character. In short, proprietors Frank and Kathy Dotzler, along with their longtime winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, did a fabulous job with all of these wines. Outpost fans may also want to read about the new project the Dotzlers are starting up with Brown that I describe under the Rivers-Marie wines in this article.
