After virtually doubling the size of his production annually for a few years running, Nicolas Potel was told by his banker to find a business partner who could help him fund his continued expansion. After some false starts in seeking a minority investor, Potel was eventually purchased last fall by Cottin Freres, the owner of the major Burgundy negociant firm Laboure-Roi.Among the benefits of the deal for Potel, beyond a substantial immediate cash payout, will be the financial backing to construct a new winery and access to some high-quality vineyards controlled by Laboure-Roi, which will enable Potel to increase the percentage of his total production that he actually vinifies himself. Potel, who was in obvious high spirits in November, describes 2002 as a vintage of fruit, and not a year for long aging in barrel. He does not consider the vintage as strong as 1999. The wines are evolving quickly, like the '85s did.'Potel destemmed more than usual in 2002, carried out a shorter cold soak than is his regular practice, and kept the total cuvaison shorter than normal 'to avoid cooking the fruit.'
