This is another stellar set of wines from Manfred and Elaine Krankl. I found much to admire in the 2015s, some of which I tasted as preliminary blends (reviewed here) and others I saw from barrel as separate components that are destined for Sine Qua Non's higher range of wines that see extended time in oak. The bottled 2014s are just as brilliant from bottle as they were from barrel. Those wines are distinguished by an element of brightness to the 2014s that is hard to miss. Readers will find the 2013s much darker and more brooding in style. Lastly, Sine Qua Non fans will want to check out the 2014 Graciano, the first wine made from the Krankls' Third Twin Vineyard in Los Alamos.

This retrospective tasting provided a great opportunity to revisit the first seven releases of Manfred and Elaine Krankl’s Next of Kyn. As compelling as the Krankls’ Sine Qua Non wines are, I have always found Next of Kyn to be just as fascinating, especially in recent years. This vertical only served to reinforce that impression.

It's hard to believe Manfred and Elaine Krankl are already on their seventh release of Next of Kyn, the wine that emerges from their home ranch in Oak View. Manfred Krankl told me that one of the things he had done in recent vintages is lower the Syrah in the blend in order to differentiate Next of Kyn from the Sine Qua Non wines. Krankl is still recovering from his motorcycle accident two years ago, but that does not appear to have affected his creativity at all. The Krankls continue to move ahead with their latest project, Third Twin, in Los Alamos. According to Elaine Krankl the fruit from this site, which is planted on distinctive, sandy soils may become a third and separate project parallel to Sine Qua Non and Next of Kyn.
