Nenin's Lionel Bares was among the handful of right-bank insiders who cautioned that the '98 Pomerols may not quite live up to the early reports. "Where might they fall short?" I asked. "They lack a bit of finesse, of elegance," he responded--an opinion I heard expressed elsewhere. The harvest lasted from September 23 through October 5, and some merlot grapes reached 14% potential alcohol. Even the cabernet franc was a healthy 12.5%. The crop level was controlled through a severe eclaircissage, and the grand vin represents a tough 50% selection.

Jean-Hubert Delon and his sister bought this Pomerol property last fall, and the new team vinified the '97 following a harvest that lasted from September 10 to October 3. Delon management already shows evidence of the same perfectionism practiced by his father Michel at Leoville-Las Cases, and it is clear that Nenin will be a Pomerol to follow-and to buy. Steps have been immediately taken to improve quality, including selling off most of the estate's cabernet sauvignon planted on SO4 rootstock-which, in the words of Delon, never ripens properly-and introducing a second wine, Les Fugues de Nenin.
