This is a solid set of releases from Mount Eden and Domaine Eden, especially with regard to the vintages in question. I have only tasted one 2021 so far, but it points to a strong year. Severe drought conditions resulted in just 12 inches of rainfall compared to the historical average in the low 30s, along with yields that were less than one ton per acre. The 2020s are more complicated for various reasons. Changes in farming practices were not as effective as hoped in combating mildew, while fires later in the season were severely challenging. As a result, production is down sharply. Lastly, the 2019s show the more gracious, understated style of the year nicely.
Mount Eden and Domaine Eden remain reference points for the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mount Eden for higher-end wines and Domaine Eden for more affordable versions. Although both estates are best known for their Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, the Patterson family consistently turns out Cabernet Sauvignons that are equally of note. The Pinot Noirs see minimal stem inclusion these days, 20-25%, and are bottled prior to the next year's harvest. Aging in wood is closer to two years for the Cabernets. The Chardonnay spends a year in wood, with a second year in tank for the Reserve. These wines are quintessential Santa Cruz Mountains.
