This collection of new releases from Mount Eden and sister label Domaine Eden is full of highlights, including several epic wines that could very well become benchmarks for future generations. The 2017 vintage appears to favor Chardonnay over Pinot Noir at both properties. It was a very wet year early on, with record rainfall during the winter followed by cool weather that delayed flowering. Heat spikes in late August and early September coincided with the Pinot Noir harvest and left the wines with a distinctly ripe character. The Chardonnays are exotic and rich, but are generally less marked by the heat. Two thousand sixteen looks like an absolutely magical vintage. The Mount Eden Chardonnay Reserve and Cabernet Sauvignon are truly magnificent and easily among the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson.
