In late summer 2016, Robert Eymael sold his family’s Mönchhof as well as the sister estate of Joh. Jos. Christoffel. But for now there should be no significant viticultural, vinificatory or marketing changes. (That having been noted, the streamlining of Mönchhof offerings that has taken place in recent years appears to have taken yet another step with the elimination of the estate’s longstanding feinherb Spätlese. Further details about the sale to Chinese investors can be found in the introduction to my coverage of Joh. Jos. Christoffel in the present report.) Eymael expressed delight with the combination of quality and volume achieved at the Mönchhof in 2016, a function in large part of Erden and Ürzig having been barely touched by peronospora in a year when it raged up and down the Mosel. And just as in this vintage’s Christoffel collection, acid levels are in the 8-9 gram range, resulting in satisfying brightness that represents a significant improvement on some other 2016s from the Erden-Ürzig sector. (For further information on Eymael and the historically important Mönchhof, consult the introduction to my report on their 2014s.)
