"Two thousand twenty-one was a year with small berries and a lot of color cased low cluster weights, rather than low cluster count, as was the case in 2015," winemaker Braiden Albrecht elaborated. Yields are down 15-30% across the board, which is not too dramatic relative to what other estates experienced. As has been the case for several years now, the Mayacamas wines blend old-school classicism with a contemporary polish. It's a style that works quite well.

Even though I have been visiting Mayacamas for many, many years, the estate feels way out of the way, like a little world unto itself. Perhaps that explains some of the success of the 2020s here. Winemaker Braiden Albrecht gave the 2020s less time on the skins and used fewer press lots, all prudent choices given the conditions of the year. Albrecht and consulting winemaker Andy Erickson have done a superb job in modernizing Mayacamas just enough to get rid of some of the rusticity that once plagued these wines while leaving plenty of old school classicism in place.
