Brothers Franco and Roberto Massolino decided to give their single-vineyard 2013 Barolos a bit more time in barrel than normal. Tasted from bottle, those wines are every bit as impressive as they were from barrel. Massolino has made compelling Barolos for several decades, but in recent years they have made additional investments that include a greater focus on quality, acquiring more vineyards and completing a significant cellar expansion. As for the wines themselves, they have never been better.

I was quite impressed with the wines I tasted with Franco Massolino. The 2012 Barolos are a bit lighter and more lifted than normal. Although the vintage signatures aren't as marked as they can be, the 2012s are polished, mid-weight Barolos that should drink well with minimal cellaring.

This is a solid set of wines from brothers Franco and Roberto Massolino. The 2011s have come together quite nicely since I last tasted them from tank just before bottling. Only the Riserva Vigna Rionda remains in barrel at this point. Massolino is among the growers who have moved towards green harvesting later than in the past, while yields are a bit less exaggeratedly low than they have been in the recent past. Overall, the Massolino Barolos present a refined, contemporary expression of traditionalism. The Barolos are all aged in cask. In top vintages, the Massolino Barolos are perfumed, silky and highly expressive.

Massolino's 2011 Barolos capture all of the breadth and power of the year. It will be interesting to see how the wines show from bottle, and, specifically, if they settle down a bit. Today, the 2011s are explosive and intense. I tasted all of the 2011 Barolos from tank just before bottling, with the exception of the Rionda, which I tasted from cask as brothers Franco and Roberto Massolino have elected to give that wine an extra year in barrel.
