Among the Big Four, Martell bills itself as “the oldest of the great Cognac houses.” It dates to 1715, when Jean Martell left his home in Jersey to seek his fortune in Cognac. As early as 1783, Martell was imported to the US. In 1912, its legendary flagship expression, Cordon Bleu, was launched; it is now recognized as the first extra-old Cognac to have its own branded name. Less illustrious was Martell’s 2017 launch of Blue Swift, finished in Kentucky bourbon barrels, and not technically a Cognac at all (though it controversially had the word “Cognac” on the label). Despite its size and marketing prowess, Martell’s higher-end bottling still delivers fine-quality Cognac.
