Château Margaux turned out a stellar set of wines. “Harvest started on September 11 and wrapped up on October 5,” Co-proprietor and CEO Alexis Leven-Mentzelopoulos and Managing Director Philippe Bascaules explained, “Sunburn was a huge issue. Usually, we pick 7 hectares a day. In 2023, it was more like 4-4.5. Time on skins varied from 15 to 28 days. Some lots extracted very fast, others took far longer, which I can’t really explain.” Bascaules added. There’s not much to say, as the wines speak for themselves. The Grand Vin, in particular, is off the charts.

"We had to spray copper almost every week, including on some weekends, to be on top of the mildew pressure,” Philippe Bascaules told me at Château Margaux once I had hastily rejigged my itinerary after inadvertently missing them off (together with Figeac). “We didn't lose a significant amount [of fruit]. We have more tractors than before, and we are organized in the vineyard. We cropped at 41hL/ha for the reds as there was no heat stress, but there was just a bit of sunburn towards the end of August. We had to sort the grapes during harvest, which took longer, between September 11 and October 5. We did some saignée for the Merlot to compensate for the lack of density compared to the Cabernet Sauvignon.”
