Marchesi di Gresy makes a wide range of wines, but it is always the Barbareschi that speak with the greatest eloquence. The estate's Martingenga vineyard (along with the subplots Gaiun and Camp Gros) is considered one of the very finest sites in Piedmont for first-class Nebbiolo.

This estate has long been known for producing supremely elegant Barbarescos that showcase the quintessential floral perfume of nebbiolo, but my impression is that cellarmaster Jeff Chilcott, who is from New Zealand, and enologist Marco Dotta have taken the wines to a higher level of concentration in recent vintages. The 2007 harvest here was squeezed into 25 days (compared to six weeks for the 2006), and Chilcott describes the estate's '07 Barbarescos as rich and strong but fruity and open. Chilcott and Dotta agree that 2006 brought more classic wines.
