Proprietor Jean-Charles Cazes has overseen a string of excellent wines at Lynch Bages in recent years, contenders for some of the best on the Left Bank. “We see a pattern of earlier bud burst, which always risks frost,” he tells me. “Spring was pretty humid and hot, so there was a lot of mildew pressure. It was a bit nerve-wracking all the way to flowering. The rest was not too difficult once we were past that, as the summer was mild, and we enjoyed a nice end of the season that made the wines less solar and more harmonious than last year. They have a fine structure and no greenness. We had good yields, 50hL/ha on the top terroirs, showing you can obtain good quantity and quality.”
