These wines from Lisini are terrific. The 2005 is an exceptional wine for the year, while the straight Brunello is fabulous in 2004. For whatever reason, Lisini does not seem to get much attention these days, which is surprising given it is one of Montalcino's most historic properties. Still, these wines more than speak for themselves. Lisini makes a number of top Brunello bottlings, including the Ugolaia and Riserva, which I did not taste for this article. More often than not, I find just as much pleasure in the straight Brunello as I do in some of the other higher-profile wines from the estate.

Lisini is one the historic properties in Montalcino and was one of the founding members of the producers' Consorzio in 1963. Family matriarch Elina Lisini was one of the early presidents of the Consorzio, back in the 1960s, and remained a fixture of Montalcino until her passing last year.
