In the early 2000s, Antonio and Georgina Terni of the historic Fattoria Le Terrazze put the Conero region on the international wine map. This was the result of over a decade’s worth of research into clones, reorganizing and replanting within the vineyards, but also a progressive way of looking at the region and what was possible there. Montepulciano was and is the primary focus, but with a willingness to experiment with international varieties, including Merlot, Syrah and most recently, Chardonnay. While I’m personally more of a fan of the Rosso Conero, which is completed in large neutral oak and showcases the purity of the variety, the vineyard selection and barrique-aged Sassi Neri Riserva is worthy of collectors’ attention. We also mustn’t forget “Chaos,” Antonio Terni’s inspired blend of Montepulciano, Merlot and Syrah made in an international style. It’s impossible to ignore, with a label befitting its name, but also an excellent blending of native and international grapes.

Le Terrazze remains my go-to source for sleek and stylized Marche reds. Antonio and Georgina Terni of Fattoria Le Terrazze started their winemaking adventure over twenty years ago. The couple made waves with several Super Marche Rossos that caught consumer attention with catchy names like Chaos and Visions of J, supported by the interesting wines in the bottle. Today, Le Terrazze continues to show the potential of reds from Marche, which few other producers seem able to do. The entry-level Rosso Conero is easily one of the best of its kind. It’s a wonderfully fresh yet complex Montepulciano. I also re-tasted the 2019 Conero Riserva Sassi Neri, my favorite vintage of this bottling to date. As for the 2020 Chaos, it shows the ripeness of the year but in a beautifully balanced package.

If I had to name one red wine producer in Le Marche with the potential to take things to the next level, it would be Le Terrazze. The terroir is second to none, with rocky, hillside vineyards situated at around 500 meters on Monte Conero, overlooking the Adriatic coastline. I’ve followed these wines for as long as I’ve studied Italy. I have always been a fan of the 100% Montepulciano Rosso Conero, which is completed in large neutral oak. The wine showcases the purity of the variety, and happens to be Le Terrazze's entry-level red. However, it’s the bigger reds, which in the past have been shrouded in oak, that have stopped short of their full potential. The good news is that the recent vintages (2017 and 2018) of the Conero Riserva Sassi Neri and Chaos , a blend of Montepulciano, Merlot and Syrah, during my tastings were both showing significantly more varietal purity than usual. This may be an effort to bring more freshness to these wines. If that’s the case, and with two good-very good vintages ahead of us, in the form of 2019 and 2020, then it may just be Le Terrazze’s time to shine. Only time will tell.

The estate's main winery building dates back to 1882, a testament to the fact that viticulture was already important in the Conero area centuries ago. Clay- and sand-rich soils contribute to the production of powerful yet perfumed wines. The estate was completely renovated in the 1980s by current owners Giorgina and Antonio Terni, descendants of the same Terni family that launched Le Terrazze back in the 19th century. Today the estate owns roughly 20 hectares of vines and produces about 90,000 bottles a year from a mix of international and native grapes. The wines were long made in a rich, thick style that appeals to many international palates, but I am happy to report that the last few vintages have been characterized by more refined, lower-pH wines that don't require a knife and fork to taste. This year Le Terrazze presented a very impressive set of wines.

Le Terazze is one of the Marche's most intriguing wineries. Proprietor Antonio Terni fashions unique wines that are well worth paying attention to. Unfortunately I was not able to taste the estate's higher end wines.
