Mildew doesn’t really care about status. Nor does it care for those who practice biodynamic viticulture and all the hard work that entails. Latour was the most significant casualty in terms of volume, with yields just 11 hl/ha, a figure I am more accustomed to seeing in Sauternes. I could see the frustration in winemaker Hélène Gerin’s face, perhaps still recovering from a vintage that took a physical and mental toll. “We had another challenge in terms of the number of passes with the tractor,” she tells me. “We did 20 in the end, especially in April and May at the beginning. As the temperatures cooled, it seemed to get better. Fortunately, the summer was nice, particularly August. The beginning of September was quite cool. We picked from September 9 with the first vat of Merlot, quite early, so we really began on September 24 and finished on October 9.”
