“It wasn’t the easiest vintage,” Axel Heinz explained. Heinz has put Château Lascombes on a new footing since taking the helm, with wines cut from a different cloth than previous vintages. “I’m glad that I started with the 2023. We are redefining the wine style and where we source the Grand Vin. Two thousand twenty-three was the first step, a jump into the unknown. In 2024, we knew the direction we wanted to go in. We have more knowledge in terms of how we want to make the wines. I won’t pretend everything was great, but it gave us an idea of the potential of different parcels as the vintage was more discriminating. This vintage taught us about the lower limits and how to achieve ripeness through canopy management, leaf removal, picking dates, etc. It was possible to obtain ripeness. We picked over 14 days. It was a compressed harvest, though we were able to pick according to our feelings rather than being forced.”
