Eric Kohler welcomed me at Duhart-Milon in central Pauillac due to ongoing renovations at Lafite-Rothschild. The new winery should be completed in 2027, though it should be operational to vinify the 2026 vintage.

“Frequent rain made the mildew extremely aggressive,” Kohler tells me. “I’ve never seen such early mildew pressure in my life. It started at the beginning of April. We lost a few bunches, but we kept it under control and, in the end, lost around 10% to 15%. Rain interrupted flowering, which is why coulure affected not only the Merlot but also the Cabernet, as we only noticed at harvest time. It is this that affected production more than mildew, and we ended up producing 32 hl/ha across the two estates. We lost a little bit of concentration when rain slightly disturbed the harvest, so the challenge was to find a good level of extraction. The 2024 is a classical wine in the style of those made 30 years ago.”
