The yield here was just 22 hectoliters per hectare in '98 before selection, as about 15% of the crop from this plateau vineyard was lost to sunburn in early August, reported owner Stephan von Neipperg. The harvest took place mostly on September 24, under ideal conditions. Polyphenol levels here were practically off the charts, von Neipperg told me, and he made the decision not to add any press wine. Not surprisingly, this wine will receive an extended elevage.

Stephan von Neipperg new super-cuvee comes from a 4.3-hectare plot of thin limestone soil over a rocky base, on a slight slope behind the Troplong-Mondot plateau. The vines are mostly around 30 years old, though some pre-date World War II and a portion of the holding was planted in 1988. Crop levels are extremely low-28 hectoliters per hectare in 1996 and just 22 in '97-and this rather high-alcohol wine (13.8% in '97 and around 14% in '96) features a powerful structure and elevated tannins. "It's not a style for everyone," admits von Neipperg, who planned to bottle the '96 in September, three and four months after Canon La Gaffeliere and Clos de l'Oratoire, respectively.
