Technical Director Marielle Cazaux turned out a brilliant Conseillante in 2023. “Yields were generous, so we did two passes to balance the vineyard,” she told me. Even so, yields were 43 hectoliters per hectare, on the generous side to be sure. Everything about the 2023 speaks to a classic sense of proportion. Although I do not ascribe a ton of importance to numbers alone, the parameters of alcohol (13.8) and pH (3.6) are quite classic in a modern-day context.

"When I look back, I don't find it a challenging vintage,” said a confident Marielle Cazaux when I dropped in twice to taste her La Conseillante in Pomerol. “The key was to take the time in terms of the harvest and the maceration. We were very gentle with extraction. It was the longest maceration that I have made, more than two weeks, just wetting the cap. It was easy to do the blend in January.” And with that, she made one of the finest wines of the vintage.
