Over the past decade, this estate has gone from backstage to the limelight in a series of well-orchestrated steps. In 2002, Caroline Spanier-Gillot took control from her father, Roland, who still manages the vineyards. By 2004, she had moved production to Hohen-Sulzen, where her husband Hans Oliver Spanier makes the Rieslings, providing them a cooler edge that they had often lacked before. Then, in 2005, came the conversion to biological farming, so that by the 2009 vintage Kühling-Gillot had established itself as one of the new stars of Rheinhessen. Their excellent vineyard sites bring structure and depth on their own, with 2013 adding the polished fruit, clarity of expression and inner balance that great Rieslings from the red slate slopes above the Rhine can exhibit in an excellent vintage.
