Richard Grosche says that in 2023, it was “the year we could do everything–from Sekt base to TBA, everything was possible. We had to be quick with Kabinett since ripeness advanced rapidly. So, we have quite a number of Spätlesen.” Some of these resulted from the selection of the GGs–healthy grapes made GG, and botrytized grapes made Spätlese or Auslese. “The challenge was not to miss the right harvest point.” Indeed, the Wegeler Rheingau collection in 2023 is wonderfully light-footed, aromatic and expressive with really beautiful Kabinetts, a supreme Spätlese, as well as Auslese and BA. Tasting the fine-boned 2022 GGs alongside makes clear how special 2023 is. Two thousand twenty-three saw even more use of large wood, with the estate wine partially fermented in barrel. The 2020 Krone Pinot Noirs show a beautiful and promising direction of travel, a name to remember for Pinot lovers.
