2012 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs

If any producer in Germany could be said to have the Midas touch, it must be Klaus-Peter Keller. Literally everything he handles turns to gold. It is not luck or destiny, though, but meticulous attention to detail, in particular in his vineyards, that has brought him so far. You are more likely to see him wearing overalls and with dirt under his nails than at a fair sporting a tie. A few years ago, he even grafted over a parcel in the Morstein site rather than replant, in order to preserve the old rootstock. He has also fine-tuned his pruning and canopy management in order to be able to extend hang time without getting higher alcohols. In fact, most of his finest dry rieslings--and three of them were among the best produced in all of Germany--have only 12.5% this year. He is also the only producer from Rheinhessen who can give the leading estates from the Mosel a run for their money when it comes to kabinetts, spätleses and ausleses. In fact, from the dry silvaner to the excellent pinot noirs, there was nothing short of outstanding this year from an estate that essentially has no peer in Germany.
