It was quite difficult to visit Kapcsándy winery and taste the wines just a few days after Lou Kapcsándy passed away. Having known him for over a decade though, I am pretty sure Lou Kapcsándy would have wanted the show to go on. The 2019s are stunning wines led by 100% Franc Rapszodia, which is just brilliant. Overall, the 2019s have a bit more volume than most vintages here, but the wines retain their personalities.

Kapcsándy fans will find much to admire in the estate’s 2018s and 2019s. The 2018s have come together beautifully since I tasted them from barrel. That is especially true of the 100% Cabernet Franc Rapszodia. Franc can be a moody variety. Perhaps that is one of the reasons it is seldom bottled on its own. In barrel, the 2018 Rapszodia came across as light, but from bottle it’s a completely different story. As good as the 2018s are, the 2019s are truly stratospheric. That is obvious in tasting the Estate Cuvée, always the first wine in the lineup. Incidentally, I tasted all the 2019s as final blends, one of the benefits of a later tasting this time around.
