I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted recently at Kapcsándy. The 2021s reflect the natural intensity of the drought vintage and convey much of what makes this small Yountville property special. Harvest started on September 22 for the Merlot and ran through October 8 for the Cabernet Sauvignon before concluding with Cabernet Franc on the 13th. I tasted the 2021s next to the 2013s. As is the case at many estates in Napa Valley, the gradual move towards a more vibrant style is evident.

It was pretty difficult to visit Kapcsándy a year after Lou Kapcsándy's sudden passing. I miss his wry sense of humor and willingness to express things many people think but don’t have the courage to say. As for the wines, the 2021s are hugely promising. I tasted base blends, which may or may not be fully representative of the finished wines, but the samples I saw were all superb. In 2020, the Kapcsándys bottled a single red wine, the Estate Cuvée, from the small amount of fruit they were able to harvest. Most of the crop ended up on the ground.
