Dr. Herwig Jamek noted that while 2023 was slow to start, the summer was hot and dry. It was the precipitation in late August, not too much, that sped up ripening. “Suddenly, within a week, everything was ripe,” he said. Due to slight hail at the end of August, the tops of the grape bunches were damaged. Sorting these grapes out painstakingly took time, but ripe fruit was harvested throughout. Ripeness beyond 12.5% potential alcohol meant that no Steinfeder and only some Grüner Veltliner Federspiel categories were harvested. Still, while the labels may not carry this designation, the resulting wines themselves are delicious, sitting stylistically between Federspiel and Smaragd. Harvest at Jamek started on 20 September and finished on 6 November 2023. He notes, however, that 2023 was one of those years “where you could just have photographed grapes simply because they were so beautiful.”
