These new and upcoming releases from Inglenook continue a trend started in 2011 when proprietor Francis Ford Coppola made major strides in his quest to focus on quality. Chris Phelps is now making the wines, and while it is far too soon to know if there will be any stylistic changes, the 2017s are pretty impressive. I was also quite taken with the 2016s, which are every bit as compelling as they were last year.

Napa Valley veteran Chris Phelps took over day to day responsibilities for winemaking at Inglenook when Philippe Bascaules returned to Châteaux Margaux following the untimely passing of Paul Pontallier. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see where Phelps takes Inglenook in its next iteration. One thing is certain: Bascaules left Inglenook in far better shape than he found it when he arrived in 2011 during one of the most challenging vintages in the history of Napa Valley. More than anything, Bascaules made Inglenook relevant again.
The strong personality of vintage appears to mark the 2015s to a significant degree, at least at this early stage, to the point the Napa Valley and Rubicon Cabernets are not as differentiated as they are in either 2014 or 2016. It will be interesting to see how the two 2015s develop in bottle and, specifically, if the wines become more distinct with the passage of time. Also tasted: 2016 Blancaneaux, 2016 Sauvignon Blanc
