Marc and Etienne Hugel agreed that 2002 and 2001 were years with similar sugars and acids. One important difference, though, was the higher rainfall in 2002, especially during the key ripening period prior to the harvest," said Etienne. In general, we never got good material to make late-harvest wines in 2002.It was too misty and wet, without enough heat to concentrate the grapes," he told me, adding that a hot wind from the south from October 26 through 28 ripened the gewurztraminer and made possible a picking for SGN.According to Etienne, 2002 was a larger crop in general in Alsace, but quantities in Hugel's own vineyards were down 20% from normal. The 2001s, adds Marc, are more minerally wines that give a stronger impression of dryness.
