It is always fascinating to taste through the range with Jasmine Hirsch and explore the attributes of specific parcels on the ranch. The two 2018 Pinot Noirs Hirsch has released so far point to a promising vintage. Unfortunately, the 2017s are much more variable. Unprecedented heat spikes in 2017 caught most of the blocks on the ranch at their most vulnerable state. As a result, the wines feel shocked. In two tastings (January and April 2020), I found the 2017 Pinots to be light, unfocused and lacking in polish, the Old Vineyard being the happy exception. There are times Mother Nature reminds us she is in control.
