Winemaker Steve Leveque and his team have done a terrific job with these new releases at Hall. As usual, the wines are rich, sumptuous and bold in style. Leveque draws fruit from a number of sources throughout the valley for this range. Hall fans will note the appearance of a new wine, a new wine from the estate's Sacrashe vineyard in Rutherford. Sacrashe has informed a number of Hall wines for many years, but 2013 is the first vineyard designate Cabernet off this unique site.

The Hall Cabernets are some of the richest and most opulent wines readers will come across in Napa Valley. Hall draws from some of the best vineyards in Napa Valley, while winemaker Steve Leveque goes for a decidedly ripe, powerful, heavily extracted style. Some of Hall's sites are more intrinsically suited to the winemaking approach than others, but when all the elements come together, the Hall Cabernets are among the best in their peer group. Several of the 2013s had not been bottle at the time of my visit in September, so those wines are rated in brackets. I also tasted a number of 2014s, but I found the wines in a slightly awkward stage, which is not unusual for wines that see only minimal racking.
