In 2009, Kevin Judd left LVMH-owned Cloudy Bay after 25 years to set up his own label, Greywacke, which is now one of Marlborough’s most respected producers, particularly in the white wine department. Unsurprising, given Judd’s background, Sauvignon Blanc is the main event. In 2024, the style is riper than usual, but there’s no shortage of acidity. The Wild Sauvignon—done in a funky style, wild-fermented in barrel, with a portion undergoing malolactic conversion—provides the most intrigue of the wines in the lineup. However, the latest release is 2022, which was a wet season. As a result, the Wild Sauvignon does not have the intensity or persistence of the superlative 2021 vintage, which appeared in the inaugural Vinous Top 100. That said, the 2022 does have a delightful mid-palate feel and fine line. In 2022, the Chardonnay continues in its usual oaky and overt style.
