Grace Family Vineyards deserves special attention this year for two reasons: more consumers may be able to purchase these wines soon, and the 2000 and especially the 2001 are potentially stunning wines. After two years of virtually no production (5 barrels in 1998 and 5-1/2 in 1999), Dick Grace will finally have a decent quantity of wine to offer in 2000 (11-1/2 barrels) and 2001 (16), as the replanted upper vineyard is now being used in the blend. Gary Brookman, who also makes steadily improving wines under the Miner and Oakville Ranch Estate labels, took over as winemaker here with the 2001 vintage, while Heidi Barrett, who is concentrating on her own projects, remains as consultant. I continue to love the Grace clone (actually from the Bosche Vineyard) planted very densely on this east-facing hillside north of St. Helena. The wine's dark berry and floral elements and its elegance and flavor definition often remind me of a topnotch Margaux, a style I rarely find in California.
