Vintage 2014 was quite challenging at Rinaldi. Two hailstorms in July followed by a third storm in August damaged canopies and blocked ripening in some spots. Rinaldi's plots in Ravera and Le Coste were more affected than those in Brunate and Cannubi. Marta Rinaldi told me she protected the wines with higher S02 than normal during aging because she was concerned about their fragility. And that is perhaps the best word to describe the 2014s: the wines are a bit fragile, especially compared with some of the more structured Barolos that have emerged from this historic cellar of late.
