I was a bit puzzled with a few of Giorgio Pelissero's wines on this trip, as some of his wines struck me as very ripe and chocolatey, even port-like.Pelissero, who told me that all of his colleagues like their 2012 nebbiolo wines very much, described 2010 as "a unique vintage with a late harvest.The aromas are Burgundian, floral and open; I find them to be very direct expressions of our grapes but some young people in the region don't recognize their aromas."The village of Treiso did best in 2010 due to its higher altitude, less humid air and routinely windier conditions, he pointed out.There were far less fungus pressures here, he added.

Pelissero is without question one of the top-tier estates in Barbaresco. Every wine in this lineup is solid and well worth seeking out. In particular, the 2009 Barbareschi are some of the very finest wines I have ever tasted here. The management of the tannins – such a problem at other estates – was expertly handled. Pelissero's 2010 Barbareschi had been bottled just before my visit and were too closed down to properly evaluate.
