Pelissero is one of my favorite producers in Barbaresco. Year in year out proprietor Giorgio Pelissero does a fabulous job with all of his wines, from top to bottom.

Giorgio Pelissero was charged up about his 2008 nebbiolos in September. "They have everything: structure, complexity, tannins, acidity," he explained. "I think they're at the level of the '96s." The day-night temperature differences in the weeks leading up to the harvest were beneficial for nebbiolo but not for dolcetto, he added. The '08 dolcettos, says Pelissero, are less structured in 2008 than in 2007 but more typical and more easily drinkable. The two vintages of Barbaresco I focused on, 2007 and 2006, are both outstanding according to Pelissero-the '07s featuring very sweet fruit ("almost like marmalade") and the '06s "higher in acidity and dry extract and more complex." Among his recent string of vintages, notes Pelissero, the 2008s and 2006s are likely to be the longest agers. But Pelissero's deeply colored, modern-style wines virtually always need some time in bottle.

Giorgio Pelissero is a young, passionate producer based in Treiso. As outstanding as the Barbarescos can be, I find just as much pleasure in his Dolcettos and Barberas, which are among the finest in the region. From top to bottom, this is a first-class set of wines.
