Carlo Ferrini, the renowned Italian winemaking consultant that worked with well-known Brunello estates in the past (Casanova di Neri, Castello Romitorio, Poggio Antico, Talenti) started his own project in Montalcino in 2002 when he found 2.5 hectares of land suitable to making great Sangiovese wines. Ferrini's first vintage was 2009, from which he made 3,000 bottles. Today the estate owns 5.5 hectares (2.5 hectares of Brunello and 3.5 of IGT Toscana Rosso, also planted to Sangiovese). The vines are located between 300 and 400 meters above sea level, essentially near the Lisini estate and in the Sesta area. He planted his vineyard with what he believes are the best Sangiovese clones he has worked with over the years (starting back with the Chianti Classico 2000 project). As he began planting already back in 2002 and continued to do so after that, his vineyards range from three to sixteen years of age. The Brunello is made only with the vines that are 16 years old, the rest are used to make an IGT Tuscany red. The wines are being made at the Camigliano estate where he is renting space, but he hopes to have his new winery building ready for the 2020 vintage. The estate’s name, Giodo, is an acronym of his parents two names, Giovanna and Donatello.
