The Gini family can attest to over 400 years of vine-growing experience within the Veneto; however, it was only in the early 1980s that they set out on the path that led them to where they are today. It was at that time that Sandro Gini was introduced into the family business, and with him came the push to begin estate-bottling their production. Even from the early goings, there was a push toward the minimal use of sulfur and a more natural approach in the vineyards, which today has evolved into fully organic and biodynamic practices, the use of ambient yeasts and a low level of intervention in the cellar. While I’ve always thought of Gini as a Soave producer, it was exciting and eye-opening to taste their 2010 Amarone Riserva, which is sourced from high-elevation vineyards between 400 and 550 meters. It’s a deep yet wonderfully fresh expression, with balanced acidity that makes for a great option both at and away from the dinner table. I, for one, am very happy to see the new focus on balance reflected in the portfolios of a number of the region's top Amarone producers. Sandro Gini, who remains the estate’s enologist to this day, explained to me that we can expect to see a new Amarone from them in the near future as well. But getting back to Soave, as we should with a house like Gini, the style continues to be one of purity yet full of character, and with the ability to mature beautifully in the cellar. Even their entry-level wine (now the 2019 vintage) shows some mid-term aging potential, yet there’s really no reason to wait. As for the crus, La Froscà and Salvarenza, these are powerful, deep wines that can prove the importance and staying power of Soave to any naysayer. Simply look at the source: amazingly old vines planted in volcanic soils throughout hillside vineyards, combined with a no-frills and natural approach by the estate. That sounds like a very good recipe for success.

It’s amazing to think that while most of the Soave Classico producers are only now starting to understand the importance of terroir and a more natural and transparent style of winemaking, the Gini family, under the guidance of Sandro Gini, started on the path over forty years ago. Today, the Gini winery utilizes fully organic and biodynamic practices, with ambient yeasts and a low level of intervention in the cellar. Their twenty-five hectares of hillside vineyards grow in volcanic soils, which vary greatly from location to location. The range includes the classic Cru La Frosca, as well as the Salvarenza, which hails from a small plot of eighty-year-old vines within the larger vineyard. Both wines can mature effortlessly over the course of a decade or more and are always amongst the top expressions of the region. However, the hidden treasure here is the “entry-level" Soave, all from estate vineyards within the Classico region. It represents an amazing value for its level of quality, as well as the ability to mature beautifully through medium-term cellaring. I was not able to taste any new vintages of the Valpolicella and Amarone during my recent visit, but will do so as soon as the wines are ready.

These are three beautiful wines from Gini, one of the reference points in Soave. The wines are delicious today, but the top selections also have the ability to age for a good 10-15 years, something I would not have believed had I not tasted older examples myself. The Gini style emphasizes textural richness and volume.

Gini is a great source for soft, perfumed Soaves. While the wines are delicious upon release, they have also proven to age very gracefully. Curious readers may want to stash away a few bottles in the cellar to witness the wines( beautiful transformation over time.

The Salvarenza Soave derives from 80-year-old vines (hence the vecchie vigne monicker on the label) situated within the large La Frosca vineyard. Claudio and Sandro Gini have always made some of the best Soaves, but this year's line-up is one of the best in recent memory. Also recommended: 2006 Soave Classico (86), 2006 Maciete Sauvignon Fume (85), 2004 Recioto di Soave Col Foscarin (86). Other wines tasted: 2005 Sorai Chardonnay. (Marc de Grazia; numerous importers, including Michael Skurnik Wines, Syosset, NY; Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; and Estate Wines Ltd., San Rafael, CA)

Gini makes excellent Soaves in a generous, fruity, easy-going style. Most of the Soaves are made with 100% Garganega and the estate's top selections are made from old-vine fruit.
