All three of Rudesheim's top growers will tell you horror stories about the harvest in their neighborhood. Nevertheless, they each proved that the steep, stony, fast draining vineyards here were capable of getting the absolute best out of vintage 2000. "There was really ripe material," says Bernhard Breuer, "so long as you didn't feel compelled to harvest it too early during the worst of the rain." At the other end of the Rheingau, but again at high elevation, Breuer scored success with his vineyard in Rauenthal as well.
