This is an impressive set of new and upcoming releases from Gallica and proprietor Rosemary Cakebread, who is now focused exclusively on her own project after having spent 20+ years at Spottswoode. These are all low production wines, but they are well worth the effort of seeking out. A deeply thoughtful and inquisitive winemaker, Rosemary Cakebread is clearly set to achieve great things with Gallica.

Gallica is one of my favorite emerging wineries. This year, proprietor Rosemary Cakebread has added a new wine to her lineup, the Rhone-inspired Suzuri, a Grenache/Mourvedre/Syrah Noir blend from Shake Ridge, in the Amador foothills.

I was quite taken with the wines I tasted from Gallica. Winemaker Rosemary Cakebread sources her Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville and St. Helena, Cabernet Franc from Oakville and Petit Verdot from Coombsville. Most of the fruit is fermented in small stainless steel tanks, although 15-20% is done in French oak. These handmade, artisan wines are well worth the effort of seeking out.
