It's always a pleasure to stop by and taste with Rosemary Cakebread. Quiet and unassuming, Cakebread makes some of the most distinctive wines in Napa Valley. The focus is on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, but the Albariño and Grenache are both terrific as well. But back to the Bordeaux varieties. This year, Cakebread has two Cabernets, the first the wine from Oakville Ranch Gallica fans are already familiar with and the second a Cabernet from Cakebread's home ranch on the southern edge of St. Helena, a warm site that ripens 10-12 days earlier than Oakville Ranch. All four wines in this range are compelling and well worth your time.

Rosemary Cakebread makes gorgeous, sumptuous wines from a number of appellations, although the focus of late has been on sites that are close to home. The two 2015 reds, both from Oakville Ranch, are stellar. Under the care of noted viticulturist Phil Coturri, the wines from Oakville Ranch have become increasingly distinctive. That is very much the case here as well. The Gallica 2015s are racy and bold in conception, but never overdone.

Rosemary Cakebread is streamlining her range and focusing on things that are close to home. The Shake Ridge Rhone blend and Soberanes Syrah are being replaced by a new Cabernet Franc from Oakville Ranch. As always, the Gallica wines are deeply personal and highly expressive. Readers will find both of those qualities in spades in these new releases.

Rosemary Cakebread's 2013s are all fabulous. The wines are energetic and full of life. Each of the wines draws on top sites within their respective appellations. Even though Cakebread is most closely associated with the Cabernet she made while at Spottswoode, she has shown herself to be equally skilled with a wide range of varieties. This year her Amador County wine is especially brilliant.
