This is my second time tasting the 2011 vineyard designate Vajra Barolos, as the wines were bottled a bit earlier than normal, a decision quite a few producers made with their 2011s. The exception is the Albe, which was still in tank at the time of these tastings. Overall, the 2011s offer the early accessibility of the year and plenty of near term appeal. With prices skyrocketing at many other estates, Vajra remains an excellent source for value across the range.

These are three gorgeous wines from the Vajra family. The 2011s had just been bottled at the time of my visit, with the exception of the Barolo Albe, which was not assembled. Vajra is among the estates that chose to bottle their 2011 Barolos a bit earlier than normal. It is both interesting and informative to taste the Bricco delle Viole next to the new Ravera Barolo. In 2011, Bricco delle Viole has a little more softness than normal, but the personality of the site is still quite evident, while the Ravera is much more deeply marked by the style of the vintage.
