The Vajra family has done a magnificent job with their 2010 Barolos. This year, for the first time, Vajra is releasing their Barolo Ravera, a wine that had previously been bulked out when the vines were young. Stylistically, the Ravera is a bit less polished than the flagship Bricco delle Viole, but in top vintages it can be thrilling, as is the case in 2010. Vajra is no longer the small winery it once was. The purchase of Baudana a few years back and increased production of the entry-level wines make Vajra one of the larger of the artisan, family-run estates in Piedmont. Throughout that growth Vajra has not skipped a beat. Every wine in the range is terrific, but the Barolos, well, they are special.
