The Force Majeure wines impressed me this summer and fall; all of the new bottlings I tasted were made by Todd Alexander, the ex-winemaker at Bryant Family Vineyard who took over at Force Majeure in 2014. Obviously, the formula here has changed in recent years; no longer are a number of these wines made by visiting star winemakers. And Force Majeure recently finished building a new winery in The Rocks District in Walla Walla and vinified their 2019s there; the wines had previously been made in Woodinville.
Force Majeure’s wines will eventually be from 100% estate vines; currently, the only fruit they buy is from SJR Vineyard in The Rocks. According to Alexander, Force Majeure is now picking a bit earlier, except for its Mourvèdre, in an attempt “to harvest the power of our sites.” And, beginning with the 2017s, he has reduced the percentage of new oak and is making increased use of larger-format barrels, with the same objective in mind—as well as to maintain freshness and to preserve the aromatic aspects of his wines.
